Tsuen Wan is one of Hong Kong's earliest new towns and has changed from an industrial area to a commercial and residential one; the malls and estates in its centre are linked by a network of footbridges. West along Castle Peak Road are Sham Tseng and Ting Kau, and Ma Wan is an island beneath the Tsing Ma Bridge.

Tsuen Wan Station is the terminus of the Tsuen Wan Line and Tsuen Wan West Station is on the Tuen Ma Line; the two are not connected and are more than ten minutes' walk apart. Sham Tseng and Ting Kau have no railway and rely on buses and minibuses along Castle Peak Road or Tuen Mun Road. Private cars are restricted on Ma Wan, and residents mainly use ferries and buses.
